Tips for Being Your BEST SELF during Sorority Recruitment

Even though the idea of joining a sorority is exciting, sometimes going through the recruitment process can be overwhelming. Meeting so many girls, having to remember lots of information, and being put under tremendous stress during your first few weeks of school is a lot to handle. But, there are a few things you can do to ensure that you present yourself in the best possible way, so that you can find your perfect home at the end of the week!

1. Speak in the positive
Every time you talk to a sister during recruitment, think to yourself about how you can put everything in a positive light. We are quick to be hard on ourselves, but viewing things positively will show sisters that you are confident, determined, and optimistic - all qualities that we want in future sisters! For example, if you are going through the process as a sophomore, don't say that you "got terrible grades and so you couldn't rush," or that "you really hated all the sororities last year." Instead, speak positively by explaining how "you decided to take time to focus on your academics" or "realized that the timing wasn't right for me last year, but now I'm ready to find a sisterhood."

2. Write it down
You are going to me LOTS of girls during recruitment, and it's easy to get confused. After each round if you have a few minutes, write down the names of girls you talked to, what conversations you had, and what you liked/disliked about each sorority. This will help you because the next day you can refresh your memory before heading out for the next round.

3. Get your rest
No matter how much you love or hate recruitment, you will be absolutely exhausted. In order to present your best self every day, make sure to go to bed at night and get lots of sleep. You want to make sure you are awake and perky when talking to the sisters, not falling asleep or disengaging from conversation.

4. Drink lots of water
Water is just as important as getting sleep. There are so many benefits to drinking lots of water, and your body will thank you for taking care of it. Recruitment is a draining process, so make sure to hydrate and refuel your body regularly so that you don't burn out.

5. Pack an emergency bag ahead of time
There may be lots of little things that you need - extra chapstick, a compact mirror, or some sweatpants to wear over your dress walking from house to house, to name a few. Before the week begins, pack a tote bag with all the essentials and keep it well stocked throughout the week. For a good list of what to bring, check out this post.

6. Take time to get ready for the event
In order to put your best foot forward, it's key to make sure that you take the right amount of time to get ready. Presentation is super important, so be sure to iron your shirts, brush your hair, and don't overdo it with makeup! Also don't wear anything too revealing or short - you aren't going out the to the club! When you look great, you'll feel great too, which is why taking the time to be put-together for recruitment is a must.

7. Get a jump start on schoolwork
Once again, recruitment is a very busy time. Prepare yourself by trying to get as much of your schoolwork out of the way as possible. You don't want to be starting work at midnight after a long, tiring day of meeting sisters. Normally recruitment happens during syllabus week or over the weekend, so make sure to be fully in the moment for recruitment by not worrying about your homework during those times! Plus, you'll start the semester on the right foot by not procrastinating.

8. Utilize your resources
You will be assigned a Recruitment Counselor that you can go to with any questions or concerns. Because they are temporarily disaffiliated with the chapter and you won't know which chapter they represent, they are a great unbiased resource to go to when you need to talk about recruitment, how you're feeling, or have any questions about the process. Take advantage of the wonderful resources that are provided to you and make the most out of the experience!

9. Hash it out
I really enjoyed talking to my friends from home or family each day after recruitment. It was helpful for me to talk about the things I liked and didn't like, and allowed me to have a (somewhat) clear idea of what I wanted in my head. It's not a good idea to talk to other girls going through the same recruitment, since your opinions can be skewed or affected by what the other girls say, but talking to someone who is removed from the situation is a good idea.

10. Keep an open mind
I cannot stress this one enough. And I am certainly guilty of not following this rule, as well. It is extremely important that during recruitment, you try to see the value in all sororities and base your opinions on the interactions you have, not any preconceived notions. While it's amazing to meet girls ahead of time if your school allows, this can seriously throw off your game and leave you feeling more confused and stressed at the end of the week. I wish I could go through recruitment again, without having any predetermined thoughts, and see how I felt - it's so important that you evaluate all the chapters objectively!
