YesPlus: The Courage Zone

Over the winter, I took a course called YesPlus, that is part of the International Association for Human Values in Washington DC. This course is a program designed to boost happiness and leadership skills through the art of meditation, yoga, and breathing. Throughout the course we learned many tools and techniques for helping us handle whatever life throws our way, and expanding our horizons to be our best selves. One of my favorite concepts was that of the Courage Zone.

There are always certain tasks that will be out of reach, which make up the Impossible Zone. For me, that might mean that I will never be a stellar basketball player (yay for being super short) or that I will never come to enjoy roller coasters (heights + flipping + speed = a big no no for me). Those are things that I can deem "impossible" because given my abilities, personality, and circumstances, I will never be able to do those things.

On the other hand, other activities are much more comfortable to me. Performing on stage, hanging out with friends or even writing this blog all fall into my Comfort Zone. But, life is not exciting when you simply live in the comfort zone. They say that everyone exists but only some people really live, and YesPlus helped to teach that by extending out of our Comfort Zones, and entering what was called the Courage Zone, we can broaden our horizons to completing new tasks or participating in new adventures that can have tremendous influence on whether or not we live, or simply exist.

The Courage Zone is about all of those times when you hesitate before moving forward with something. There are days when I contemplate putting on a bright or bold lipstick when getting ready, because I worry that it will stand out too much in class. Just last week I chopped off 10 inches or more of my hair (for the first time ever) - I was so worried that I was going to hate it once I cut it all off but I'm so in love and I'm glad that I did something out of my normal comfort zone.

There's more to come with lessons learned from my YesPlus course, but for now - what's one thing that puts you in the Courage Zone?
