Hey everybody! Today in my College Guide I'll be talking about college parties and how to deal with them!! This can be exceptionally helpful for some of you; a lot of students are very anxious about the party scene at college. But it's totally chill and you don't have to worry one bit. Just follow along below for the basic do's and don't's...
... know where you're going. It's easy to follow along with a crowd and end up somewhere without really knowing where you are (especially at a city school like mine). Find out the address of the place, who "lives" there, and know how to get there and back!! And charge. Your. Phone. In advance - Google Maps can be your best friend, and it's always a good idea to have a fully charged phone when you go out for any photo ops / flashlight needs / emergencies, etc!
... stay out alone. Always always always stick in a group. I like to go out with at least two or three really close friends, and we always make a plan to leave by a certain time. Even if we stay out later than expected, we will always leave together unless we know for sure that the one who stays behind is in good hands (read: with another friend) and will return home safely. It's also a good idea to check in with your friends and their roommates to make sure that everyone has made it back okay.
... tell someone where you are. I have a few great friends that I can always count on to help me out if I need last minute rescuing! I'm super lucky that my brother goes to school with me, and I'm also very close with all of his friends. When you go out somewhere, make sure that you let someone who's staying in know where you'll be, in case you need them to walk back home with you or check up on you if your friends can't find you.
... let anyone pressure you into doing something you're not okay with doing. Everyone's idea of fun is different, and that's totally okay! A lot of times we get worried that someone will thing we're "not cool" for avoiding certain things when we go out, but most of the time people are so worried about themselves that it doesn't matter what you do. Just have fun in your comfort zone and don't feel like you have to do anything to fit in! Just be yourself and you'll have a good time.
... allow yourself to have a good time! It's easy to be intimidated by everything that goes on in college and shy away from fun things because you're anxious. Don't worry! A lot of people are probably in the same boat as you, and that means you can stick together. Find a few others who you can feel comfortable and safe around, and just have fun. Go crazy and dance, or chat it up on the side. You can have fun even without being wild. Just relax and don't let yourself get too tense.
... be afraid to try it out and find out that scene is not for you. A lot of students will go out during the first week of school for orientation just to see what the scene is like, and then decide that they would prefer to hang out in a different setting. College is all about experimenting and finding yourself, so it's perfectly fine to try something out once and never again. Give everything a shot and you won't feel bad about missed opportunities!
... have fun!! The number one rule is always to be safe and have a good time. College is great, but it can be tough to navigate the social world at first. Hopefully this post was helpful for some! Stay safe and have a great year!!
