Playing Matchmaker: Jewelry + Lips

Jewelry and Lip Pairs

I love experimenting more with lip colors when the weather gets cooler at school, and decided today to come up with some perfect lip and jewelry pairings. Choosing the right jewelry and adding the perfect complimentary lip color can enhance the vibe of your outfit, and I'm loving these combos!!

one // bold fuchsia lip with edgy rings

two // delicate nude gloss with a classic tortoise cuff

three // a super-pale pink lip to match whimsical bee studs

four // bold red paired with your borrowed-from-my-boyfriend signet ring

five // plum pout with an earthy green geode pendant to match the season's trends

six // hot pink lipstain and big black earrings make a statement for evening

SHOP THE POST BELOW:

I wish I remembered to wear lipstick more frequently.. these looks are inspiring me to amplify my makeup game this season!! Do you have a go-to red lip? My favorite is Blake's Red by L'Oreal Colour Riche.

Johns Hopkins Q&A

Hey everyone! Today I wanted to share a Q&A about some basic questions I get asked all the time about attending Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. For kicks and giggles, I wanted to start out with an awesome quote from my favorite professor, Lawrence Aronhime.

How did you decide on Hopkins?
Coming to Hopkins felt like coming home. When I visited for the first time the summer before my senior year of high school, I distinctly remember saying out loud "This campus is beautiful." It was the only school about which I had vocalized this opinion. After being accepted, I came for an overnight visit when all prospective students stay on campus for two days. That night with my host, laughing and joking with her and her friends felt right. It felt like home, and it felt like I belonged here. And as it turns out, I do love it here. Being at Hopkins is like coming home to a familiar place with familiar people and everything just feels right. While I do miss home during the semester (and can't wait to head back for the holidays and eat my parents' delicious food), during the breaks I find myself longing to be back in Baltimore. I can't even watch Hairspray anymore without a strong urge to be back in my incredible Charm City (Hairspray was based on the town of Hampden, about a 5 minute walk from the Hopkins Homewood campus).

What helped you get into the school?
I took a lot of AP classes in high school and was involved with many organizations. I was on a dance team as well as the member of multiple clubs, and during my senior year I was the president of the Spanish Honor Society. I also became involved in academic organizations such as National Honor Society and tutored middle school children. At the same time, I managed to participate in a pre-professional dance company as many as seven days a week all through high school. While everyone's qualifications look different, these were just some of the things I was involved in and could have contributed to my acceptance.

What scores did you need to get in?
Again, scores will vary from person to person. The middle 50th percentile for standardized tests in 2014 was 2120-2310 for the SAT and 32-34 for the ACT. For more fast facts, click here.

What are you majoring in?
I am a Global Environmental Change and Sustainability major, with a double minor in Spanish and Entrepreneurship and Management.

Aren't you insanely intelligent?
I've gotten this question multiple times before and to begin, thank you for the compliment. However, it is important to remember that the students at Hopkins are just like any other people! One of the things I like best about being here is that the experience is so humbling. While I might have certain expertise in one category, some of my friends are incredibly smart in other areas, and I value that greatly.

Is it as cutthroat as I hear it is?
Not really. There is a general atmosphere of collaboration and friendliness, and most people, unless they are bizarrely competitive, are not trying to be cutthroat with you. The school prides itself on the opportunities for cooperative learning, and most students are that way as well. We don't mind helping other people out, so long as we can still succeed academically ourselves.

What about the BME major?
I actually don't know much about the BME (Biomedical Engineering) major and how competitive/cutthroat it is, but if anything that comes from the pure difficulty of the major. The BME major, at the best in the country, is extremely challenging. It is the only major which requires a unique, pre-declared application and the odds of acceptance are even lower than normal. Students are also unable to transfer into this major after being accepted. The coursework and highly selective nature of this major makes for a competitive atmosphere, but nothing much greater than what you would experience at the university on the whole.

But isn't Baltimore unsafe?
Although Baltimore has its good and bad areas, the area in which JHU resides, Charles Village, is fairly safe. The town is under careful watch by Hopkins Police (affectionately known as Hop Cops), and Baltimore Police. Officers are stationed around campus at all hours of the day, and even through the night. Cops on bikes, in cars, and on foot can be seen all around, and they are excellent at doing their job. Furthermore, there are many awesome transportation services that Security staff provides courtesy of the school. If you are somewhere nearby late at night and don't want to walk back alone, police escorts are always on call, or you can take the Blue Jay Shuttle which picks students up at various locations and brings them back home to their dorm or apartment. I have even had Hop Cops drive me to and from the local drugstore if I felt unsafe walking by myself. Most of all, it is important that you use good judgement, always stick with a group, and take the routes that are on campus, instead of on the street. Baltimore is such a unique place to explore if you act responsibly and are aware of your surroundings.

What is the social life like?
The social life is just like any other school! While we don't have large sporting events (even though our teams are awesome) or fraternity houses on campus, there is still an ever present social and night life. There are always events going on for students to participate in, and an abundance of places to go at night. Many student groups on campus work extremely hard to plan events throughout the whole year, and they are often a lot of fun!! Plus, if you are so inclined, the sporting events are great too. Additionally, because of our proximity to the Inner Harbor there is great access to many bars, clubs, and event venues as students get older. The one difference, I would say, is that many students find their own social groups of friends on their own and spend time together socially, instead of having large school-wide events. There is a group for everyone at Hopkins, so you can be sure to feel included in something!!

Do you actually have fun there?
Yes! As a member of a sorority and two dance teams, I spend a lot of time with different groups of friends, and we always plan events to hang out together. I have made some of my best friends here, and know that you can have a fun time at the school, you just have to work hard so that you can relax too!

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Despite the challenge, I absolutely love attending Hopkins and think that if you have the chance to attend an Ivy League or other highly competitive university, go for it! It's an opportunity that won't come around again, and it is so so SO worth it!!! If you have any more Hopkins questions, comment below!

Daily Reads

Hey there everyone! Today I wanted to point out a few of my favorite blogs that I check out every single day. I love reading blogs and following fashion bloggers for inspiration and new ways to wear my favorite pieces - plus they always know about the best deals and all the upcoming fashion trends before anyone else!

Tumblr Bloggers
Some of my favorite bloggers are fellow Tumblr users who also have a passion for writing blog posts and sharing their life via blogging! Every single day I check up on Caralina Style, Monogram Meredith, Dash of Serendipity, Prep of the South, Lucky Day, Yep It's Prep, Boston Belle and Precious as a Peony. These girls are all the sweetest and reading their blog posts each morning make me sooo happy!

Fashion Bloggers
If you haven't figured it out by now, I am absolutely in love with Caitlin Covington from Southern Curls and Pearls. I would honestly love to meet her someday, she seems like the sweetest person in the whole world! I also have been really into Bess Pearson's blog Evergreen and Ivy, and Amy Littleson's I Believe in Pink. I also recently stumbled upon the blog Hello Fashion, which is fantastic!! I love it so much and am obsessed with Christine Andrew. And last but not least, I am in love with Whimsical Charm, a blog run by my friend's sister (AT Holliday's sister Hannah!). She posts so consistently and has a great variety of posts which I absolutely adore. Her blog is one of the first I check every day. Of course, there are tons of other blogs I read regularly, but these are just some of my favorites!!

This photo was the one that led me to Christine Andrew's blog! I'm in love with that skirt and upon looking it up found out that it's really a two piece - totally would have worn that to prom or another formal event!!

Caitlin Covington is my #fashiongoals all year round, but this look is the main inspiration for everything I'll be wearing this fall. I imagine that dress and scarf combo is soooo comfy!

Of course I have to give Amy a shoutout and some TLAM since she's also a Theta!! Look how adorable she is with her sisters in Prague - I can't wait to keep up with her adventures!!

That's it for my favorite bloggers today! After scrolling through all of their blogs while writing this post, I realized how much I need to buy a domain for The Scalloped Edge! Maybe over fall or winter break I'll look into it? What has your experience with domains been?

The Perfect Study Outfit

Studying Outfit

As midterm week draws closer, having the right pieces for hitting the lib is essential. Hours upon hours of sitting on your butt doing work can be uncomfortable and exhausting, and it's easy to want to stick to the standard leggings and sweatshirt ensemble. However, a few easy fixes can keep you looking chic and study-ready!

1 // Swap your leggings out for a pair of super stretch skinny jeans
My favorite pair is from American Eagle, and they are the best jeggings by far. They are stretchy and easy to move in, plus they look more streamlined and classic than a tight pair of leggings. I absolutely swear by these jeans, and I probably own at least 5 pairs.

2 // A striped shirt will never fail you
Seriously, there is no wrong time to wear a striped shirt. Just take it from Spongebob. A long sleeve tee provides just enough warmth for the chilly library temps, and looks much cuter on than a baggy tee shirt. Keep it simple, but keep it classic.

3 // Flat shoes are the way to go
A basic shoe like a Chelsea bootie is perfect for the library! For extra warmth, you can go for some cute socks peeking out the top. While I'd normally go for a heeled bootie, a flat shoe is much more comfortable for the late night trek back to your dorm, as well as any get-up-and-walk-around study breaks.

4 // Bring a blanket (scarf)
Scarves are great because they're always so chic and make you look like you put together a fantastic outfit, when in reality you don't have to try too hard. A big cozy scarf can easily double as a blanket when the library gets insanely cold, and you will look super stylish! Nothing better than a big blanket you can wear, right?

5 // The extras are important
A classic leather backpack and some simple headphones are going to make your stay in the library so much easier. The backpack will hold everything you need and nothing you don't, so you won't be lugging extra items with you to study. And the headphones are great for cancelling out noise when people get chatty on their study breaks.

That 70's Show

That 70s Show

Recently, I cannot get enough of seventies inspired fashion! I bought myself this pair of flared jeans and plan to wear them with heels and wedges throughout the fall. Fringe, platform heels, crop tops, and round sunglasses all allude to the hippie vibe, and turquoise accessories add a nice contrast to the yellow in the top. This look needs to get in my closet ASAP, it's totally far out!

Color Crush: Racing Green

I recently received an email from Mark and Graham talking about their new items in the color Racing Green. I instantly fell in love with the color and think that it's the perfect shade for this fall! It reminds me of the holidays and spending time with family. Now that the weather is starting to cool down here at school, I'm anxiously awaiting all the fall clothes and outfit planning!

Font Fancy

Now, I'm not a big Pinterest user, since Tumblr is my main form of social media, but every once in a while I find myself needing to be on Pinterest for something, whether it be the Her Campus Blogger Network or to search up some handy college packing lists. This past week I was reading Dash of Serendipity's Friday Finds and fell in love with the fonts she linked from Pinterest. I instantly downloaded them all and started playing around with new blog graphics and fun posters for my wall. So, I decided that I would pin some of my favorite font inspiration to its very own Pinterest board and share with you all!! Check out the board here.

And of course, I decided to make my "Oy With The Poodles Already" poster public for y'all to print out and hang up. It got so much attention on Tumblr and I'm obsessed with Gilmore Girls now, so this poster is surely fitting!

Just right click on the image to download and print! Does anyone else watch Gilmore Girls? Season 5 has been so, so good!!

Fall Finds

Fall Purchases

Today I'm rounding up some of my recent purchases for fall! Although I know I'll miss summertime when the temperatures dip, for now I can't wait to break out my fall clothing and start testing out the season's new trends. To start out my season right, I bought a bunch of basic pieces in black and white, denim, burgundy and leopard. These classics will last me such a long time and can be styled so many ways; I'm looking forward to shooting more outfits posts now that I'm at school and I have some friends who are awesome at photography!!

Side note - thank you oodles if you suggested the Revlon ColorStay Foundation to me!! It's amazing so far and I love it. It lasts all day without looking heavy or cakey, and it evens my complexion beautifully. I can tell this is going to become a new makeup staple for me!! What products are you picking up for this fall? I'm dying to find the perfect occasion for that houndstooth dress!

Update

Now that school is back in session, I think I'm going to have to edit my uploading schedule a bit.. maybe once or twice a week depending on what's going on. It's the 5th day of classes and I'm already swamped with work, so bear with me while I figure out all the kinks!!

Happy school year!
